Autumnal Wistfulness

"We are such stuff as dreams are made on;
And our little lives are rounded with a sleep."

~ William Shakespeare - The Tempest ~

~

It's been a perfect first day of Autumn, here in the UK, but there
were signs of this beautiful season, long before it arrived...

Hydrangea petals showing their bare bones...

Apples, all ripe and ready for harvesting before time...

Pine cones and empty nests... ♥

Leaves turning from olive to flaming shades of amber and crimson...

Leaves fluttering to the ground.

Perfect Autumnal gifts, created using reclaimed
church windows and the richest scarlet leaves.

Ghostly reads being devoured beneath
blankets, as the nights became colder...

And so begins my favourite season.
Perhaps a little more Autumn decor is in order.

Do you decorate your home for Autumn?

I've been using some of Autumn's gifts to create jewellery, some of
which you can find over at the Melancholy and Menace shop, on Etsy.

  1. Hello Yvonne - have found you again at last :-) Your photos are beautiful as always. Spring is my favourite season, followed closely by autumn. It is spring here at the moment & the garden is coming to life but it is still wet & freezing.

  2. What lovely photos, Yvonne.
Pine cones are abundant here, I've filled two willow baskets and a galvanised bin this week - they make for wonderful burning in our wood burners. xxx

Know'st thou not at the fall of the leaf
How the heart feels a languid grief
Laid on it for a covering,
And how sleep seems a goodly thing
In Autumn at the fall of the leaf?

And how the swift beat of the brain
Falters because it is in vain,
In Autumn at the fall of the leaf
Knowest thou not? and how the chief
Of joys seems—not to suffer pain?

Know'st thou not at the fall of the leaf
How the soul feels like a dried sheaf
Bound up at length for harvesting,
And how death seems a comely thing
In Autumn at the fall of the leaf?

Don't really decorate my home...Looks like
Autumn most of the time anyway! :).
But, the Virginia Creeper..(my pride and joy),
that covers the back/front of my home, is starting
to turn red..It looks great this time of year,
especially that the Garden Spiders have their webs
stretched across the leaves, it's amazing how they
do it...I have one, that's 3ft across the dining
room window! Outside of course, not inside, Charlotte
still lives in the little pink bird house! on the
inside! HeHe! So l'm afraid the windows don't get
washed/clean, until next month. Can't go disturbing
the wild life! :0). Oh! And, l feed them as well,
catch the odd fly/Daddy~long~legs...they love them,
and l love to watch...In for the kill...HeHe! Must
be the Sicilian blood in me!

Nice to see ya up and running again Yvonne...Often
    wondered how you spelt Melancholy...!!!

  7. Such beautiful pictures, Yvonne - I had no idea hydrangeas could look like that! I'd like to say I decorate specifically for autumn, but I believe I left everything out after I decorated last year so I guess it's year-round decor now. I'm so lazy. ;)

  8. Yvonne - is it really you? I've looked all over the internet for your blog, so pleased to find you again. Thanks so much for the Halloween card - I love it! It is the first and only Halloween card I've ever been sent which makes it even more special.
The photos in this post are amazing, I especially like the book and bird nest - I just might have to 'borrow' that idea. Thanks again for the card I really appreciate it xx

    1. Hi Barbara ♥ Sorry, I did do a kind of disappearing act. I meant to put my new email address in the card, too, as I can't access the old one. I'm so glad you liked it. Saddened that you've never received one before, but thrilled that mine's your first one ever. Hopefully catch up soon xx
